The BAAN DAM MUSEUM, also known as the BLACK HOUSE MUSEUM, is a private art museum that consists of a mixture of traditional northern Thai buildings with unconventional and contemporary Lanna architecture. The building complex was designed by local artist THAWAN DUCHANEE, who started his project in 1975. Until its completion in 1996, more and more buildings, sculptures and works of art were added, including the Cathedral, the Small Temple, the East Pavilion or the Tri Phum Triangle House. There are more than 40 different buildings spread across the site on an area of around 160.000 square meters. Fantastic artworks are presented within the buildings at permanent exhibitions and creative cultural events are held regularly. The great artist THAWAN DUCHANEE, who is also called „Thailand’s Emperor of the Canvas“, was born on September 27th 1939 in Chiang Rai and died on September 3rd 2014 in Bangkok. He counts to one of the most important creatives of the country. For the architectural historic sites like White Temple or Blue temple is an individual page and urban art can be found on the page Streetart Chiang Rai. The photos were collected by DIANA and THOMAS aka the NOMADS ON WHEELS, who travel the globe with their mobile home. Unfortunately, they had to leave their cool orange van behind for this trip and took a plane to beautiful Thailand.
